Fix the System

Post by Guest »

I know this will never happen due to the $$$$ involved but they need to get rid of the GTHL/OMHA etc and turn it into 1 league with 4 divisions (East, West, North, South) 8-9 AAA teams in each one. AA/A would have a similar format. Add relegation so the worst team at each level and division drops down a level and the Top team moves up in each this will insure that centers are run better due to the fear of relegation. So that means 4 AAA teams will lose their AAA Status and be replaced by the top AA teams.

That would be wild! I know some 2012-2010 kids that have been on 4+ teams already, imagine the damage they could do in that type of league style. We could see records broken for sure. Johny Jim Johnson is 14 years old and has played on 16 AAA organizations.

I think it would cause lots of chaos & confusion, but I like where your train of thought is going. Something needs to be done to fix minor hockey. Promotion & demotion might help cause change for clubs by motivating them to choose their best possible teams, instead of having teams that cannot compete in the league they are placed in, all because the parents want their budding beer-league superstar to play AAA instead of A hockey, so much so that they bribe their way onto a team.

If done with a clean break from 1 year to the next it could be seamless. Maybe even lock you in for 2-4 years once you join a team unless released to avoid all the team flopping every year? so if you join a team at U10 you need a release from that team until U14. U14 and up its 2 years forces coaches to develop players as there would be less movement.

it would be nice to have a governing body that is accountable and holds minor hockey associations accountable. Wishful thinking i think.

They are going to have to do something. Registration has been dropping almost 8% per year with the increase in population that should be a real concern.
