If the coach gives you that commitment offer, you're stuck playing there or saying no and dropping to AA tryouts. Coaches and organizations hold ALL the power. Good players have zero options and lower level players are full of options at this time of year. The rules make families go to extremes to do what they think is best for their situation.
I would also ask yourself this

Who wants the release
You or your kid
And
You can just move
No one says you have to live in a certain centre
Go to where you think the grass is greener
In all likelihood hood the same reasons you want out will pop up at your new home
The reason being is that YOU were the cause of the toxic environment that you want out of
Not always. Sometimes organizations assign bad coaches and board members and good people get screwed over.

Especially when QRD kicks the crap out of your team city slicker!

It’s a double edge sword. You hold on to the good players as long as possible because you’re looking at them still, but when you let them go it is sometimes too late for them to find another team to play on. More often than not the coach knows they are not taking these kids and holds on to them so they don’t go to bordering organizations. They don’t want to play them

This argument about moving is so simplistic. Why should anyone have to move just so their kid can play on a competitive AAA/AA hockey team? These idiotic rules were made with the best intentions, right? We all know where best intentions normally lead. No, any kid should be able to play anywhere in the province. There should be no restrictions. Are we in a communist country???
You can. There are literally teams all across the province, especially Southern Ontario that allow you to play anywhere you want. So go.
But Hockey Canada rules exist for a reason. Are they perfect? Of course not. But would you rather a system like girls hockey where, if you haven’t got a commitment from the coach by December, start panicking and figuring out where to go next.
If you can play, you’ll get noticed.

Name another competitive youth sport in Ontario that doesn’t allow you to choose where you play? There are many reasons why kids want to play somewhere other than their home centre and there is nothing wrong with that. I thought the OMHA finally figured it out when they opened the borders up a couple of years ago. Of course they totally messed that up and reverted back to the original rules for u16 and below. Well kinda, if you did leave your home centre OMHA grandfathered those players. That made no sense at all. Oh and once you reach U18 the OMHA borders open up… makes so much sense.

Please tell me why it matters where someone chooses to play? Who is being affected by a player choosing to play outside of their home centre. I do think the OWHA has a better system. Players can choose what scenario/coach/organization they want to be part of and are not stuck or held hostage if they are one of the better players.

In OMHA AAA is only open at U18

Except in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons they allowed open borders for U14,U15,U16. Any player that left their home centre during those years was not required to go back to their home centre after.
