Monopoly on Brick Teams

Why do the two organizations have a monopoly on the ontario based teams? The amount of $ they charge for “tryouts” which ends up being $120 with 50 kids on the ice going around cones, is criminal.

Should there not be a “little league” style tournament that dictates who gets awarded the two teams. Its time for a change. The stories of berating kids, coaching half drunk and overall unprofessional behaviour should no be awarded with perpetual rights field a team.

Look at the numbers Toronto Bulldogs just posted 426 kids @ $80 a pop. These guys are raking it in from delusional parents that think The Brick tournament will mean little Johnny goes to the show. CRAZY 34k in a couple of hours

These teams are typically already picked before tryouts. This is not new, parents need to not go for this to stop

"Monopoly" is the keyword here. It's all about who has the most money. So many talented kids will never see the light of day due to a lack of finances. It's a real shame that these kids will never reach their full potential. Add in parent coaches who do not care about all players and their development and it's a recipe for failure. In a few short years, Canada will struggle to produce the best players in the world. It all starts from the half-ice fiasco in major novice to how Hockey Canada has emphasized skill development over teaching the game. If coaches focused 80% on the game during practices and 20% on skill, kids would be so much better off. Skill development is very important, but shouldn't be the focus in "hockey" practices. Do skill development privately; there are endless options.

So you talk about people not getting a fair chance due to costs but them recommend private skill development in the same thought... what side are you on?? What good is learning the "game" if you dont have the skill to compete?
Skill development should be the focus through Minor Atom and then Major Atom start shifting toward game play, but not 80/20. Thats fine for those who have the time and money for private skill sessions, but for those ones who struggle, they need better than 20%

You can work on shooting and stickhandling at home for free. Skating can be developed on odrs, public skates, and if you can rent the ice yourself it is much cheaper than spending money on a skills session. There are many ways in which skill can be developed at a much lower cost. In peewee and above the focus has to be on teaching the game.

Sorry to hear your experience was bad. Ours was great and would definitely recommend that anyone who is able to go, should do so.
