Season did not even start and none of the kids would have played on this team. How can someone even suggest there is a top player lol
He played 2014 AAA I think it’s a safe bet
Any strong player in the OMHA outside of WW has ended up in the G. A tale old as time.
Nope, only desperate parents would move a 9 year old to a Toronto team for an NHL dream. Look at OHL draft picks the past two years. They should probably stay on the OMHA.
Very good point. OMHA zones are starting to produce a lot of talent and have in the past as well. There have been some very good players out of OMHA and a lot of kids in the G that made it far would still have done so playing in the OMHA. It just so happened that their parent felt it necessary to play in the G. If the coach is known to develop players it’s just ridiculous that parents are driving into Toronto traffic during rush hour thinking their kid is magically going to become the next NHL star because they are playing in the Gthl. The kids athletic gifts and work ethic does not change by just playing in the G. Some parents need a reality check.
Agreed. Definitely don't have to play in the GTHL to have fun, develop or to make it to the NHL... fairly obvious point (shoutout all of Russia and Scandinavia and most Americans and actually most Canadian NHL players!). However, it is interesting that on the teams that made the NHL playoffs this season there are a total of 44 GTHL AAA alumni. There is no minor hockey league with that level of "production". Now whether the league/GTHL teams produce the players vs simply provide the venue for the highest level competition for the best players to develop (with their own talent, time, parents money, etc to get there) is debatable. However, clearly making it into the GTHL at the AAA level and then excelling is likely as good an avatar for success as any if you're hellbent on highest level play.

We literally 'missed out' on 3 OMHA centres - home centre took the coach's nephew in net, neighbouring centre did not want to risk every year having to wait for our son to get released from home centre because he is obviously the better goalie (their words) and then another centre was willing to import but didn't call until after tryouts and he had already made a team in the GTHL. For us it was a question of finding an appropriate level of play. If we had stopped at the first home center cut he would have been relegated to BB in our local town. AAA to BB doesn't seem right. There are politics and BS everywhere. We just tried find a place that strikes the balance of cool people and appropriate level of competition.

IF you have a strong option, good coach and sane parent group, then leaving Alliance or OMHA makes no sense. As you can see with this site, lots of crazy parents, ill intent coaches and weird politics in hockey. In my experience, OMHA has some great hockey and playing on top tier teams isn’t always in the best interest of your kid. Development happens through adversity in all things including hockey which means, you want them to work and not be insulated. This is why you’ll see a lot of top 8 yr olds disappear by 13. Many parents chasing jerseys and trophies to the detriment of their child. So with all that said, absolutely stay in your centre if you can. Don’t get sold on the G bullshit. But if you’re dealing with low quality coaching or parent or coaching or crazy parents or home town politics, then the G is a great option because you have 12 teams to choose from. At the end of the day, do what’s best for your child or at least do what you think is best for your child. No one should care or be insulted if you take a different route than them. If you decided to drive, 3 hrs to play hockey, so be it, that’s on you and I wish you the best.
