Curious about the difference also. Live in Burloak (east Burlington, basically Oakville ) and my will be AA or AAA wth the eagles. I hear so many horror stories of the omha driving schedule for AA and AAA. We would have less driving if we were in the G from the looks of it. For AA would the Gthl still be a better league than omha? Is the driving (for where we live) better in the G? For AAA I have a good understanding already, I feel. Just not sure what route to go (I know I need a release for the G or have to get creative btw).
The OMHA driving burden is nirvana compared to navigating GTA traffic - remember it’s games AND practises.
Quality: You have a lot of low Hockey IQ & low skilled coaches in the G so no guarantee of excellent development. Check how high they played. Some are linked to hockey schools that you HAVE to enrol Junior into. Lol.
Cost: Guaranteed to pay thousand$ way more than OMHA - usually for no benefit - Exceeds way more than your OMHA gas money.
Draft: Greater percentage of players drafted from outside G.
My take: Find a local coach who knows the game, has great track record, knows respect, and doesn’t look easily bought.
GTHL Prospects & All-Star games - don’t expect results-reward - all kids of deals and nepotism and hockey school support in the selection process. OMHA team prospect events better this G travesty.
AAA quality - Equal share of weak teams. Don’t drink the kool-aid.
More drafts from outside of G to where? OHL?
Omha had more ppl drafted this year than the G. My son was one of them . Trust me the G is not better . No one leaves a good team in omha for the G unless it’s VK or TM
The weak kids that have no team from COW and Clarington ended up on Markham for next year the omha Markham is way better
It’s not always better being in the G
Same for the 07 draft. More OMHA than G. And some of those G kids originated in the OMHA and went in.
Scouts love the G because they dont have to travel far. They can see the top kids in the league over and over again G won OHL two years ago and in finals last year, but both of those teams had kids from all over the province. So to say the development in the G is better is a farce. Its way more expensive, Ill give you that. The only way this could be settled is if the G teams had to play by the same rules as everyone else. Don’t get me wrong, I hate the closed borders and all that. My son benefited from the open boarders for sure. But the debate isnt fair as long as a team can draw from anywhere inside of Toronto and also draw from the LOR while the OMHA teams impose closed boarders.
The last two years is as close as you’ll get to an even playing field. The ETA has had Ptbo the last two years and Barrie this year. SCTA has had Halton and Oakville. These teams were allowed to recruit the way the G does and there was only Vaughn both years, Marlies both years and 07 JRC, that could hang with those OMHA teams and beat them sometimes. So really, if we all play by the same rules, its pretty even. One just costs a whack load more money to play……lol.
