This is one of those questions where it is almost comedy to even ask - half the coaches wouldn't know a decent goalie if they saw one. The position is misunderstood at all levels of the game, especially in this age group. My observation is that the 'best' goalies are not on the best teams because the 'best' goalies at this age want to keep improving and get better. Being on a TM, DMF, or JRC won't do that for you in this cohort. Look to the middle-of-pack teams and you'll see the very best goalies because that is where their goalie coaches (and parents if they are switched on) want them to be. They won't be on the weakest teams either because that is where dreams go to die (50 shots a game and getting blown out won't help 'develop' anyone).
Having seen most of the goalies during the 'skate' season/last NYHL season/klevr. I can say the Sens goalie is not as strong as advertised above - gonna say that commenter probably has seen too many goalies in this age group...that goalie looked about 3rd among the goalies at the skate we went to but who knows how they are in a game, JRC has one strong goalie (didn't see the other), TT one average goalie & one below average, TRW one strong goalie/one below average, DMF one average/one below average, NYR one strong (didn't see the other), Nats one strong (didn't see the other), VK two strong goalies, Reps had one strong if still the one from last season. MM both below average (I'm gonna say this will be a big problem for them). Not seen: Rebels or TM.
100% agree. Probably Sens goalie is not the strongest, but still quite strong and it was bold for him and his parents to go to such a team. Have you seen their do’s? A tall kid from HD who lacks technical skills and dances to his own tune is by far the strongest, the rest are even worse. So I think that this gk will have a difficult season where he can either move to a different step or loose self confidence. Hopefully it’s the former.
By the way, have you ever seen aa goalies? Few of them are also quite good.
Was at the VK tryouts and saw a terrific AA goalie there (who came out just to see, per his dad) but who was committed to Humber Valley i think. Totally AAA quality. Also, there was a girl goalie who we saw a few skates who i believe opted to girls AA and i can say as a goalie and goalie coach she was the class of the age group by a country mile. There is definitely some great talent at AA however the gap is also huge between AA top and bottom tenders...if you look Markham's AA goalie last year 2014.... clearly nowhere close to even an acceptable AA goalie. Maybe a mid-pack A. No shade to him they are all young and learning and the coaches should know better but at AA there is less talent for all the teams and thus the gap can be huge. AAA has tighter tolerances than AA.
I am not aware of any girl goalie playing at the AAA level, who was she skating with?
She played girls AA U11 Stoney Creek last year (as an 8yo). Literally a head taller than the boys and her movement was crisp. I saw her skate for Bulldogs/TM, MM, and another. She was fantastic. I believe she has opted to return to girls hockey - only gossip.
