All these so-called "birthday" skates are nothing but cash grabs for greedy coaches. These skates have also caused tons of stress for parents, especially for the kids, and piling up on these kilometers throughout the cities. For what? To line the pockets of these "Minor" hockey coaches with "CASH".

Let's do the math -

The high-end cost to rent 1 hour of ice at Chesswood is $450 + hst = $508.50.

The low-end cost to rent 1 hour of ice at Rinx is $225 + hst = $254.25.

You invite about 20 to 30 players at $40 per (average cost) = $800 or $1,200.

The coach pockets per skate about ($800 - the cost of ice) = $291.50 to $585.75, or ($1,200 - the cost of ice) = $691.50 to $945.75.

After attending all these skates you paid for, you then have to attend tryouts and pay for that too!

Oh, wait - There is still a possibility that the coach who offered you a spot can still decommit cuz they believed they found that magical unicorn player.

Question - Do you really believe that the majority of these "A" coaches are going to invest in your child's development?

This is the problem with the G that caused this to happen in the first place. It's all about the money!

In my days of minor hockey - the coach will tell you at the end of the season whether you are or not on the team for next season. You picked up the sporting scene "tryout" paper and plan your tryouts accordingly. You go to your tryout regardless if it was your team or another and do your best to stay or make it. None of these backdoor deals at "Birthday" skates or greasing the coach's pockets to get your kid on the team. Also, Org's hired good quality coaches who taught team development, systems, skills, etc... not just to fill a team with kids that shouldn't be playing at the Rep level to make money. Additionally, coaches convince you to attend their hockey schools, so your child can get extra training.

And, You're asking yourself why hockey is getting expensive. What a joke minor hockey has become.

Oh well... Let the tryouts or team practices next week begin!

"Skates" or whatever you call them go on for a few months before tryouts. Every team has skates and rosters are almost fully filled by tryout time.
Games are not typical, that's not spring hockey.
Why is it not the spring? Why can’t kids play a friendly hockey game in the spring?
Not if they are wearing G jerseys and representing their teams. "Friendly" lol this sounds like two over eager SINGLE A coaches.
Who was wearing G jerseys? How do you know?
Clearly not in the know
If. But they were only wearing practice jerseys.

How does anyone know? Live Barn. You think you can hide?

There is nothing wrong with spring hockey, however there is something wrong with skating/trying out for a team before tryouts. That is tampering.

Your son was skating with attack. Is that legal?
