Guest wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 7:59 am My kid can kinda skate, he’s stall, slowly learning to stop and skate backwards, intense compete
Anyone else find the Learn to Skate programs aren’t that great, ie its just ice time
We are lucky to live near a solid centre in East Toronto so there’s private skate schools and other opps for ice time
Wondering if there is a point to registering for a house league next year (the sat/sun morning times are just awful)
One benefit is the select team but at U7 its banger hockey at best and really dependent on 1-3 players who can wheel around and they don’t even pass
Do they even keep score?
The thought of driving to the 401 or even to North Toronto for 6pm sounds like a nightmare
Although you are right...sometimes at that young of an age its better to just put them in private skating lessons instead of Timbits or whatever league you city people have.

there are things you kid would be sort of missing out on (not crucial, but its something) playing on the ice in a team setting. Following instructions. making friends that they might one day play higher level hockey with.

There are "other options" out there for hockey that young. KSL will have full ice hockey for 2018s next year. Coaching and "other training" is dependent on each team (like any other hockey). No idea whats in your specific area as far as "Toronto teams" but there are the Toronto Raiders, Toronto Stars, and Toronto Aces all in "Toronto"

good luck.
Top 2018s can do cross overs front and back, stopping they figured out a year ago and are figuring out how to bar down.

Good to find a team very young both to build hockey sense but also to start networking w future coaches teams as this is all very untransparent. Good luck.

https://www.humbervalleyhockey.com/cdp/
Think of it like more localized Select. CDP is West End, CDS is East End. Link above explains it fairly well
That said there are also teams (GB, HV) that are creating CDP teams that don't play house league, just 3 practices a week + CDP game. Others like FS play house league + CDP
Gotchya, thanks for the info.
I have read that the best thing a kid under 10 is to join CDS/CDP.
So for kids in north of Toronto (R.hill, Markham) where CDS/CDP is not as close, it would be best to just try out for the city's MD(Minor Development) team and if they can't make that, try for a Select team?
North York Hockey League.
Just like anything the CDP program is 100% dependent on the coach you have. At this age skills are most important. Find a good coach who knows what they’re doing. You can also do extra skills training off season. Make sure your kid know to do drills right rather than fast.
These years matter very little. Focus on getting your kids skills up to snuff and making sure they have fun. Things become more competitive around U10.

Got it
A friends kid started playing the CDS and said with the practice and games the ice time adds up
Maybe for next year power skating packs would be a good option to supplement if there is an interest

Hockey is really its own beast with parent involvement!

The CDS/CDP schedules are posted online for everyone to see.... CDS and CDP are playing each other all the time at U7. Looks like the exhibition games are with OMHA centres like Markham Waxers, Oakville, etc. I'm honestly confused--what am I missing here?
The best of the teams (ranked Tier 1 or in some cases Tier 0.5) play a bit more cross-city as a necessity to match skill sets.
We've played crossover with CDS once, maybe twice all year? Which even if twice that's only once that you are the one doing the driving.

Don't play hockey. Hockey Canada along with the gthl is garbage.
