Steve Simmons tears into NHL activist Akim Aliu
"No one wants to say this because of the politically correct police and all, but those who coached Akim Aliu must cringe every time they see him in a news report or a commercial talking about what’s wrong with hockey. Like he would know. By my count, Aliu played for 23 teams in nine different leagues in 12 professional seasons and rarely finished any season with the same team he started with. If that was colour-related, how is it that Wayne Simmonds spent just about the same 12 seasons playing in the NHL?"

what a stupid question to ask... did they both play for the same teams, with the same coaches, and same GM's, in the same years??
nope - so the question has zero merit.
you cherrypicked one player who had a stable career. You conveniently forgot to mention that when Simmonds was asked a couple of years ago if he would put his kids in hockey. He said he wasn't sure because of the level of racism in the sport.

YUP - but Aliu had 22 different pro teams in 12 different leagues covering 6 different countries give him the chance to play - to earn his spot and keep it........
After 22 different teams you have to ask the question and figure out the common denominator.

"you cherrypicked one player" - do you honestly think you're communicating with the guy who wrote the article?Guest wrote: ↑Tue Oct 11, 2022 11:41 pm "If that was colour-related, how is it that Wayne Simmonds spent just about the same 12 seasons playing in the NHL?"

Would it have made a difference if the reporter provided a list of 20 players who overcame racism and had stable careers?
I think his point is that Aliu is presenting himself as some sort of Martyr and all that went wrong with his career was due to his ethnicity. Meanwhile the truth is that Aliu peaked in the OHL and he had a bad attitude. Guy who are difficult to get along with don't stay in one place for long.
For the record - racism is wrong. But to suggest that "hockey culture" is racist is ridiculous. Yes, there are some players who may be true racist, but they do not represent the majority.
Hockey Diversity Alliance wants to change the face of the game.
Sidney Crosby, Conner McDavid, Mario Limieux, Wayne Gretzky and Steve Yzerman are all Canadian faces of the game...is Aliu suggesting that they are all racist? That they need to be cancelled and erased from the history books, because they represent a racist culture?
Re: Steve Simmons tears into NHL activist Akim Aliu
There are plenty of white players who have played in all kinds of different countries, teams leagues as well. I guess they didn't make the NHL because of racism as well?Guest wrote: ↑Wed Oct 12, 2022 10:00 am"you cherrypicked one player" - do you honestly think you're communicating with the guy who wrote the article?Guest wrote: ↑Tue Oct 11, 2022 11:41 pm "If that was colour-related, how is it that Wayne Simmonds spent just about the same 12 seasons playing in the NHL?"

A classy response from Kadri. An example of his attitude and character. Key ingredients to his success in life.
Kadri added that Simmons “definitely wouldn’t want to see” the conversation about his column in the Hockey Diversity Alliance’s private group chat.
“I think, like I’ve said, this kind of stuff we obviously are too familiar with. Strength in numbers, we all try to stick together,” Kadri said. “At the end of the day, we’re doing this for all the right reasons. He’s just a guy who’s a little dated in his writing.”

did you miss the part where current Leaf Wayne Simmonds said that he'd have to think hard about putting his kids in hockey because of the racism??
Not saying this of the Leaf organization - He's talking about hockey culture.

Just so you know, you're responding to a person who belongs to a racialized group and I didn't hesitate to enrol my kids in hockey.Guest wrote: ↑Wed Oct 12, 2022 5:24 pm Leafs won't give Robertson a chance...is TML organization racist?

Its a real shame that Wayne is going to deprive his daughter from all the positive experiences from hockey. If thats the case, he should consider keeping her out of other team sports, as the same racist hockey players that might traumatize her are most likely multi-sport athletes and will likely cross paths with her on the pitch or court or field somewhere.
Its even a greater shame that he is teaching his daughter that she is a victim and that her ethnicity is preventing her from achieving. A far cry from what he said back in 2020.
“...“That day, I started thinking about my future, and I allowed myself to believe that the colour of my skin wasn’t a barrier and that if I gave the game my all, I could play in the NHL, too....”

I think Wayne has forgotten about all the support he and his family received from the wonderful people who represent hockey culture.
"[Toronto Aces] coach Mike Hutton, he made deals with my husband," Wanda Simmonds said. "He would lower the rate and exempt us from the tryout fees and stuff like that because we had three other boys we were taking care of as well. He would help out that way. And there's Ann and Mike Herron … they would come pick Wayne up. I would call Ann from work and say, 'I can't make it, can you grab Wayne from school and take him to the tournament and I'll meet you there later?' ... We had a lot of people, a lot of good friends, who would be there when we couldn't be or until we got there. We depended a lot on Wayne's teammates' parents and they were great with us.
