alot of basic coaches still will pick a kid who had a top 3 jersey from u10 but has clearly plateaued, vs a kid clearly better, but their jersey was not top 3. Facts

Mostly cause coaches are lazy and don’t want to work that hard and evaluate players or cause politics w their current team. Easier to say u recruited the 7 to 9th F on of a top 3 team to parent groups then the really good kid from team 4-12

Happy season opener everyone
Best and elite will always be elite, not true. Kids development will plateau. The difference will be size, strong and mental fortitude. 30+ year in hockey and I've see it all. Some kids show talent in their early years and then fade while others grow character and improve year after year. Out of all the kids in this age group 1 or 2 may make a good career out of hockey and more often than not it's kids that nobody expected would make it.
Actually that’s not true at all. More often than not it is the kids who you expected to make it that do, but the stat of only 1 or 2 kids making it sounds about right. Sleepers who develop late into stars only happen once a decade or so and maybe even more rare than that. People just use the late bloomer line to give false hope and get more $$$ out of parents who’s kids don’t have a chance.
Keep your teams roster list and highlight which kids are consider elite now and we will see which of them if any make a career as a hockey player.

The coaches know absolutely nothing just like you. Have you seen the movie Money Ball? No one can predict the future.

Reading this stupid comment from someone who never played sports almost had me choke on my morning coffee. Of course coaches can see potential, that’s why all over the world in every sport they have programs for gifted players starting at young ages. You can already tell the kids who have IQ and the kids that don’t if you watch the games. The people who expect their average kid to magically become a good hockey player in a few years are delusional unless the kid has a massive growth spurt or some other physical miracle. Stop expecting things your kid can’t deliver and just enjoy the ride! It will be over before you know it.

There are not many coaches that are qualified to #1 identify talent and cultivate talent.
yes coaches can see he is Good, but identifying whats wrong with his skating, how he reads the ice etc and how to fix it is rare.

Most coaches will just cut and replace rather than develop kids with deficiencies. I have seen 1 or 2 hockey coaches who are ELITE and what they said to me is gospel, the rest are used car salesman.
