New team, and for U7, I don't think it matters. U8 probably doesn't either.

MD programs don't have tryouts until Fall. I am sure they will be fine.
Yeah - I heard some rumors they initially didn't get interest from enough players, but that was before this new try-out was announced. My son is going so we shall see.

But having a full roster and 7/8 yr olds not playing is just a bad situation. Hopefully you have found a situation best for your kid. If you decide to stay in KSL there may still be a few teams with roster spots. Aces might a spot for a D still.
I think this is a generally accepted truth. At this age, there should be no one on your team getting way less minutes than anyone else. This is of course if it isn't a disciplinary situation. If i've told little johnny to stop putting the puck up the middle 5 times this game, your going to bet hes sitting for a bit. Or if little johnny is not skating or working hard at all, that may happen too.

But if the kids are working hard, there is no way you should be intentionally messing with minutes unless the game is within 1 with 5 minutes or less to go.

What parents DO need to understand is that some times as a coach, kids are going to get more minutes than others, and its sometimes just because kids get stuck on the ice sometimes. Most kids are still learning to change quickly and effectively at the right time. It happens.
And don’t play for people like KV if you value this

Using Power Play or Penalty Kill lines in a close game is fine. Putting the best players out at the end of the game when it is close is also good. Taking 3 lines of players and shortening the bench in the first = garbage. They are kids, let them play or cut them so they can join a team who will.
If you’ve ever coched 9 year olds you know the best player one game aint always the best players the next. If you’re only playing your kid because you’re the coach and you can, or if you’re developing a small circle of kids your power will run out. It’s a small community and you won’t be the coach forever. Develop the kids YOU PICKED at this age so you have a strong base and team for years. Don’t blow your reputation and credibility on 9 year old hockey.

The best kids are always the best kids especially at this age where this is little to no real systems. it's all about skill, if a kid is the most skilled kid he will be the best player in the game 95% of the time.

same goes for team winning games. the team with the best player(s) typically wins

I agree, the best players play at a higher level and it really shows at the younger ages. The gap narrows as the weaker kids get faster and stronger on the puck. I will disagree about the team with the best players wins. Our team is pretty strong but we have beaten more talented teams because we move the puck. When their superstar tries to go end to end, our forwards backcheck like crazy and our D keeps them outside. That being said, if the talent gap is wide then the weaker team gets slaughtered. Gotta love Spring hockey as there is always at least one team on the wrong division…

There is some wild stuff happening out there in Spring hockey for sure. But, to be fair, SOMETIMES its not that the team is in the wrong division. Realistically, at this age, for things to be "fair" you need like 4 divisions.

1. Top tier teams, the best of the best, the teams that fly kids in from all over to play together as an all-star team
2. REALLY good top tier KSL teams, maybe some of the spring teams that are not quite "all-star teams" but close to it
3. Solid Tier 2 and lower end Tier 1 KSL teams
4. MD teams, and low end Spring teams

Even then, the there would be blow outs.

I was wondering the same thing, is there really that much talent in Mississauga? In the 2016 age group there's 2 Mississauga Stars teams, Mississauga Raiders, and now the Mississauga Giants...?
