Depends on the length of the game, tournament with multiple games etc. and the stamina of your 2 C's. But you can always start with a shorter bench up front then see how the game goes. Or start 4D and 3C and shorten the bench according depending on how the game goes. The bigger question is do you have a player who can play F or D? and whatever you do, some pesky parent will get their nose out of joint, especially if they're all about this equal ice time bs.

Reasoning

D have more opportunity to conserve energy during the shift. Particularly in when the play is in in the o-zone. While the Centers are working hard at both ends of the ice. No sense in gassing out the centers early in the game. If the game is tight, you're most likely shortening the bench in the 3rd anyways.

Whatever kid you move should should be given fair opportunity and support from the coaches in his temporary role. It's not right for that kid to step up for his team and then lose playing time due to his lack of experience.

This scenario shows the value of utility players, as well as reasons why D need to learn how to play both strongside and weakside.

When I say "fair opportunity" I don't mean equal ice. I mean as much opportunity as he would have in is usual position. Nothing wrong with coaches shortening the bench to win a game.

Also @2:27 is being realistic when saying that some parents will be upset, as many prefer to see their kid in a certain position and in some cases with certain linemates.

Not every team has a player who can swing between forward & defense. Majority of forwards don't skate backwards very well and will struggle with their timing when trying to defend a rush. Defending the house and switches are completely forgein to wingers and In most cases they end up being a defensive liability. While most defenseman will lack scoring touch around the net, their strong defensive tendencies make them reliable enough to earn themselves a regular shift.

In other words, moving a D to forward is very doable while moving a forward to D is risky.

Some people like the concept of incentive and reward based on merit, as well as a more competitive environment. This is not for you.

Clearly you place the emphasis on "participation" and thats fine...the hockey community understands and that why there is a division that would suit your expectations of "equal ice" perfectly. In fact there are more leagues / teams in this division, compared to the most competitive divisions where coaches do shorten the bench to win games.

Given that "equal ice" divisions offer more opportunity to choose from, I'm not sure why you have an issue with the more competitive divisions, with fewer teams to choose from?

Some people think that you should be responsible for your own actions - you offered a spot to a kid and now you have to develop and play him/her. It's on you, not on the kid.

But being responsible for your own actions unfortunately is not for everyone in nowadays society. Too bad you are one of those people.
