Why would anyone coach hockey??
Why would anyone coach hockey??
There is nothing to gain and everything to lose. When was the last time you as a parent or your kid legitimately said THANK YOU to your coaches?

Re: Why would anyone coach hockey??
I saw a post from Westlake on Twitter where kids took pictures of another kid in the change room and shared it on socials. Coach was held responsible. So coach can’t be in the room with half naked kids and is supposed to know 100% of the time what the players are doing etc. It’s flawed. Coaches hung out to dry and like the poster above one small complaint true or false and you’re ruined.Guest wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 7:08 am All it takes is one false complaint and your personal reputation is ruined. Re: Why would anyone coach hockey??
The kids in this case should be charged criminally, if they are of an age to do so. At the very least investigated. Coach should not have to babysit kids. Also does not have the power to seize property. It is made clear to families what is expected when kids come to rink and some people don’t teach their kids those values. This is why coaches make family or parent cuts. They would rather have a kid who respects teammates more than a talented kid who doesn’t.Guest wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 7:18 amI saw a post from Westlake on Twitter where kids took pictures of another kid in the change room and shared it on socials. Re: Why would anyone coach hockey??
I have been an Asst. coach and a Trainer for my sons teams. I was asked after he was selected to teams. If the volunteers didn’t step up there would be no minor sports.
Look at highschool sports, some teams don’t exist because some schools insist on a teacher coach, and a school I know of they have had to cut teams because they would not let a community member coach the team without a teacher involved.

Re: Why would anyone coach hockey??
Got a team relegated years ago because of two coaches playing their own kids, one of whom couldn’t even skate and was supposed to be a defenseman. They claimed to be ex pros from a country not exactly known for hockey talent, but their coaching was a mess. After some calls for feedback, most people weren’t happy, and they got moved out. Moral of the story, when you’re coaching for personal gain playing your kids, running camps for money, don’t be surprised when your career doesn’t last long.
Re: Why would anyone coach hockey??
Yes coaches have to be self aware when their kid is on the team. Where does tour kid fit, is he the best, worst or just another player.
With that said some parents also need a wakeup call as to the commitment coaching is. You can leave the rink and go for coffee, wander around etc. For games and practices team coaches are usually tied up for 2 1/2 to 3 hours dedicated to your kid.
That gets lost on some.
