my kid is on a AA GTHL team and they are not doing well and the environment has become so toxic I'd like to pull him off the team and go to another team, we've found a team already, but wasn't even sure if this can be done. Anyone have experience with this? Any chance of getting a partial refund?
Just be thankful you are in the GTHL and have options. In the OMHA, you are owned by your centre and stuck no matter how toxic the team, coach or parent group is. If you are in a AA centre, you can’t even get a release to play on the A team, have to play houseleague. We are all hoping for open borders next year, which will add some accountability.

On another note, if you pull your kid from every difficult situation then you aren’t teaching them any resilience. I would stick it out, get your kid some extra development and make a move next year. Don’t be a bubble wrapper. Playing on a bad team for a year isn’t going to kill him.

Great response everyone. It's a situation, I won't go into details, but there are fights in our locker room because the coaches kid and friends are playing half the games, and they are don't score and are always -4 or -5. I want to stick it out, but every game gets worse, my kid is easy going and isn't affected by things so far as he's contributing in scoring but has lately been asking why so and so has more ice when they are on for so many goals. I wasn't expecting a refund back but it would be nice, and I agree with some comments, we did get all the tracksuit and swag so we don't expect a refund for that stuff, the team we signed up for is nothing like the team we thought we would be on I guess the players we saw at the birthday skates knew and didn't commit, I was sold a nice package and thought we got into a good situation, but it turns out it isn't. Won't complain much more than that. Anyways thank you all for your input I've requested a release.

Sorry you had this experience.

It happens to many people. It’s unfortunate, but remember the coach can be complained about. I got a coach and assistant coach fired for pretty much the same reason you are describing. They never got to coach another team in the GTHL. Both their kids are not even playing hockey now. They claimed they were semi pro from another country.

It’s a cut throat league it takes sometimes 1-2 years to figure out coaches and the right coaches… you don’t want to ruin the kids confidence. Glad you pulled the plug earlier. Don’t go to teams where there are parent coaches or parent influenced coaches .. pay the extra for non parent. It will give you an honest assessment.

A kid joined my son's team about a month ago, similar situation.
You need to go to the coach and association president, ask for a release ASAP, give your reasons why, and stop going to practices and games.

As far as 'already having a new team lined up,' be cautious because there could be tampering accusations if you're active with the other team while carded by current team. Definitely don't let your kid skate on their ice or go to any team functions.

I'd also say keep the emotions out of it. Say it's the best decision for my kid, and nothing else.
You're not going to get $$ but you will (hopefully) get a release.

Also, do not contribute to the teams Christmas present for the coach or the assistant coaches since you’re leaving I don’t think there’s any point.
I’m sorry but that’s funny. I like you

Getting your release is easier than you think. Finding a team at this point of the season is a lot harder. Don't get a release unless you're promised a spot on another team first. Otherwise your kid will not be playing.

I don't understand why ppl think they should get their $$ back if the player wants a release? Now, If the team wants to give you the release, then by all means you should get everything you paid refunded.

I think all parents on all times from HL to AAA offer $1000 for enrolment all teams. If they can make that work $15,000 a team perfect. If not close up all shops until they figure it out and they will, cause $1000 times every kid is a lot of money

I know what you will say the price of the arena, guess what supply and demand that goes down to cause if not they go out of business too

This does not need to be a multimillion dollar business in a billion dollar industry.

PS. Why do we pay alcoholics to coach our kids, where are the volunteers, anyone notice in AAA arenas the “pro” coaches always come from the ECHL? Or backwater leagues lololol but your not a pro, your a drunk that has no life skill so you coach hockey, but pros are in the NHL, you played ECHL hockey and made the equivalent of someone that works at The Bay or Metro

Honestly stop paying for these bad situations, and heaven for bid, get back to the volunteers
