I think my kid will be about 5’6 and skinny when his draft year comes. But by 19 he will be 6’3 and 200, some don’t like to wait :(

Oh my, so many parents here who just don’t understand hockey or how the OHL/CHL work. Out of all of the players just draftedfrom Ontario, a handful of them will ever step foot into the OHL never mind going beyond. When the NCAA eligibility rules changed, the CHL saw an opportunity to turn it into more of a professional money maker business, just as much or more than it is a “developmental league”. The goal for the teams now is to put butts in the seats in their arenas. They will be taking the best players possible from both sides of the boarder. Also Boston translation when they announced the new NCAA rules was the fact that they are now allowed to carry for European import players, instead of the previous two. For those of you who don’t know, American players do not count as an important player, a team can carry as many American players as they wish. As you will see the upcoming import draft, you will see the Russian start to be drafted again and come over in the fall. The CHL will now mainly consist of 18/19/20 yr old players, with the odd 16/17 yr olds who are exceptional or ready to play at that age with the big boys. NCAA teams can now bring their players in starting at age 20 or 21, which is initially how it was designed to be, but previously they were forced to bring some players in earlier if they had outgrown their jr program (aka USHL). The USHL will now struggle as WILL THE USNDP, BCHL, and every other junior league since the CHL is where all the best players in the world will be competing. So the few of you who think the American players aren’t going to report, sorry to tell you… in the U 18 draft will also be pretty much all American players who are NCAA bound that CHL teams passed on previously because they were afraid they wouldn’t report before the NCAA rules became a thing. Not to mention they’re allowed to bring in “free agents” so you’ll see a lot of 19/20 yr olds coming into CHL camps this fall who are NCAA committed playing a year or two there before heading to school.

They don’t draft on what you did last year. They draft on your potential as a player.

Hey so my kid couldn’t get on AAA this year but he played AA. Next year the plan is to be on U18 AAA. He should be a shoe in since he was on the top AA team for his age group.

Does anyone know how that U18 OHL draft works? I heard it’s the exact same potential of making it to the NHL, but it just helps late bloomers like my son.

Should we start talking to agents now or wait?
